Guardamar del Segura is
a traditional Spanish Holiday town, the majority of holidaymakers are Spanish,
coming from all over Spain. It has a population of 12,000 people and lies south
of Alicante, on the coast of the Costa Blanca. As there are no discos and loud
music bars, it is the idea place to relax and chill out. The weekly street
market is buzzing
with
people buying the locally produced fruit and vegetables or the leather shoes and
handbags all of which are reasonably priced. The coastline, from the mouth of
the river Segura is quality. With sandy beaches, exotic dunes, rolling hills,
challenging golf courses, and traditional holiday accommodation.
This part of the coast is an ideal destination for a few days of chilling out,
or indeed, to get away from the damp miserable climate in the UK a winter
holiday for a month or two. Twelve kilometres of dunes and sandy beaches in
Guardamar give you the chance to choose isolated spots, or more frequented
stretches, where you can spend the day near the sea. Another 5 km of dunes
connect to La Marina in the north, a village belonging to Elche. To the south
lies La Mata,
a stretch of more marshy land, in the area of Torrevieja. Tourist
development in Guardamar del Segura has been slow and respectful of the
environment. The construction of a sports
marina near the mouth of the river Segura has added a new attraction to this
select tourist area.
Between the town and the beach is the enormous 'Queen Sofia' park, thick with
trees and plants, where visitors can enjoy cool, refreshing strolls even on the
hottest of days. To beautify the natural surroundings, ponds, botanical tours
and samples of aquatic fauna have been added. More than 800 hectares of coastal
parkland have been carefully preserved, with hundreds of monumental dunes, pine,
palm and eucalyptus trees, which were planted at the beginning of the 20th
century to prevent the dunes from invading the urban area. ACTIVITIES: Around the restored mouth of the river include Fishing and Camel
rides. If you are sports minded, Guardamar offers you extensive sports
facilities at "Las Rabosas" sports Centre and the magnificent Municipal Sports
centre, with its Olympic size swimming pool, 3 football pitches, basketball
courts five a side soccer pitches, tennis courts, pelota courts. There are lots
of traditional
Spanish restaurants
serving excellent Spanish cuisine. The Costa Blanca
enjoys more than 2,800 hours of sunshine throughout the year and an average
annual temperature of 19.3° C, the perfect microclimate for ideal year-round
living conditions. The high number of days of clear skies and sunshine means
that Alicante region is the perfect place to take your holidays, and to enjoy
the outdoors every day of the year. The chart shows approximate daily
